Christmas Ornament Project

The gift I've created for my team members at work this year is a star ornament. These ornaments have been altered from a no-longer-used promotional magnet. We had boxes of these that were being purged, but I saw a possibility and grabbed a couple of handfuls. This post contains pictures of the process to create these lovely treasures that I hope the team enjoys and will be proud to hang on their Christmas trees.

Before: Simple blue star-shaped magnets. I glued four of them together to create some weight and thickness to the star.

Covered the stacked stars with foil tape. I have a roll of this (not sheets) so the process was a little random, with lots of seams, vs a smooth sheet.

Next, I ran the foiled-stars through my Big Kick and an embossing folder. Took me awhile to find the right "sandwich" based on the thickness of the star.

Then I "antiqued" the embossed pieces by painting over them with black acrylic paint and working quickly to wipe most of it off. (seems a little wasteful, but I do love the results!). Big thanks to my friend, Annette Kerr, for introducing me to this technique!

Added rock candy stickles to the dried, antiqued stars (which you can't see in the scan).

While things were drying, I stamped, then embossed the Imagine star (from I Brake for Stamp's Time To Stamp line) and cut them out. These were then glued to the ornaments and surrounded by Picket Fence stickles.
I had a bit of glossy black to fiddle with, (the back of the word Imagine) so decided to write 2011 in Inkssentials to commemorate the team's last Christmas together.

Finished with some silver sheer ribbon and we're good to go! This was a fun project!

Holiday cards are stamped, signed, addressed, and tucked in their envelopes...ready to be wisked away tomorrow morning to their destinations. I went with a simple, yet elegant theme with this years' cards and ATCs. Took inspiration from the Verve Stamps Gallery. The first three shown are cards; the last is an ATC (some cards have Glossy Accents on the Christmas balls; others have Rock Candy stickles. Happy Holidays, all!

On Stamper's Corner Yahoo Group, we held a swap where you send supplies to a partner to create ATCs. I was the lucky recipient of Robyn's bag of goodness and created these. I added only the gemstones and some background stamping. The beautiful paper, punched butterflies, and image are from Robyn's pkg.

Altered Cardboard ATC

I had so much fun with the altered cardboard piece I created a couple of weeks ago, decided to try another size -- this is an ATC (2 1/2" x 3 1/2"). After exposing most of the corrugated inside, I added lots of paint, distress crackle (tarnished brass); used faux rust tech on the flourish; vintage photo distress stickles in flower centers.

Nice long weekend with a busy few weeks ahead, so decided to get started on cards for June birthdays...!

This first one was created using a sketch layout from one of my Yahoo groups:
For this pink card, I used a section of a tissue box (pink daisies) as the focal point. Everyone at work is so good about turning in tissue boxes to me when they're empty... This one seemed fitting for a summer birthday!

New corner punch I recently purchased... adds a little more whimsy to this butterfly stamped image. Also dug out my colored pencils and dove blender pen to add a little color to the butterfly and flowers. Diamond stickles add a nice sparkle here and there.

Of course, I had to throw in a little distressed look...

First, an altered bar coaster using a Paper Whimsy image...

This altered tag was for a Tim Holtz-inspired swap...

This last piece is a piece of 4x6 cardboard. We were to alter it for a swap and expose some of the corrugated innerds. I used distress stickles and brass crackle paint to add texture. It was a fun piece to create - think I'll use cardboard again sometime!

Hearts for the Holidays

I work with a terrific group of women and, due to circumstances beyond our control, this will be our last Christmas together as a team. I wanted to create a special gift for them this year. We had a nice lunch together last week and I gave them these chipboard hearts.....

There's symbolism with these gifts in that they're from the heart (or in my case Hart), they're heart-shaped, and the phrase speaks of the heart (and fits our circumstances). The hearts are 6x6 Maya Road ~ paper flowers, lots of stamping, glimmer mists, distress inks, and chipboard accents which have been inked and Rock-Candy distress stickled.

I was thrilled with how they turned out and the girls loved them . . . :)

Book Sale Finds!

This week, I attended the local Planned Parenthood book sale with the sole purpose of finding some vintage books, foreign novels, and sheet music to use in art projects... Success!!!! Got several (and a few paperbacks too) at bargain prices -- (and I mean BARGAIN -- it was the last day, everything was 75% off)...! Sheet music for 25-cents; books 25- 50-cents. Can't beat it. One book is English - (What All The World's A-Seeking -- "The vital law of true life, true greatness, power, and happiness" ~ should be some great pages in there to use in collage work or ATC backgrounds), one is French, the other Italian -- the Italian book has loads of pictures in it. Anxious to start cutting and pasting...! :)

I love a long weekend. Despite the fact that I was ill on Sunday, I managed to squeeze in lots of ART time on Saturday afternoon and today.... Hope you enjoy them!

Ink + Paper Towel = ATCs!

I was fiddling with the no-wrinkle distress background technique today (where you pounce ink on a craft sheet, spritz with water or shimmery mist, then plop card stock on it -- voila ~ pretty backgrounds!). As I wiped the surface of my craft sheet after each 'session', I decided the paper towel was too pretty to toss... Here are the results.

1st - the paper towel in all of it's Distress Ink glory...

Next, I glued 4 atc-size pieces of card stock to the paper towel, ran my roller-stamp over them to add a little character; then cut them out...

The result! Four finished atcs, complete with collage images and plenty-a-bling! :)

Fabric Skinny

Ever try the 'wrinkle-free distress' technique? It's one of my favorites. For a Fabric Skinny swap on Altered Designs I needed some fabric -- all I could find were some holiday color scraps (must've been from a project long-ago) and that just wouldn't do...

Rather than cut into a perfectly good shirt, I decided to use a white tee-shirt and create my own design - kind of reminiscent of tie-dye days! I pounced distress ink on my craft sheet, sprayed with water, plopped a cut-to-size section of the tee into ink; let dry. Ran cardboard thru the xyron, attached the fabric (to the front and back); added ribbon, stamped sentiment, flowers, and trimmed in Frayed Burlap Distress stickles.

I think it turned out kinda cool. I hope the recipient likes it!

Whimsy Girl ATCs

I asked coworkers to give me their old 2009 calendars a few weeks ago - there were some GORGEOUS images that I was able to cut out and will recycle from many of the pages. These ATCs contain flowers cut from one of the calendars. The backgrounds are napkins that I attached to the card with gel-medium, then sponged acrylic paint (pink and gold) along the edges). Used a Tim Holtz script stamp in the background; Adage tickets (cut out the words) - also from Tim's line. Antique Linen distress stickles for flower centers and accents. Sweet girl images from Paper Whimsy. Hope the recipients like the ATCs!

Wish I could get in the mood to create something other than holiday cards, but that's what's out in my art space now, so will take advantage of it -- just think, when everyone else is scrambling to get their's done, I'll be set. I have about 25 cards made now -- five more to go; then I'll make some Christmas ATCs to trade and call it good for this year!

I'm participating in several 1:1 swaps this month. It's always a treat to get 'fun' mail throughout the month. The first ATC is for a fall colors swap. The leaves are stamped with distress inks and spritzed with pearl Glimmer Mists, then I accented with a Tim Holtz metal Foliage leaf.

Finally, an Owl ATC - this is a new clear set I recently purchased. This guy just makes me smile. What an attitude! He's colored with copic markers (yep, I bought three brownish shades + the colorless blender. Hey, they were on sale! :)

It was an absolutely beautiful day today and we've been working outside, redoing a tile section of our patio. Shadow ran her little legs off, keeping track of everyone. Here she is taking a well-deserved break, sunning herself on the deck. Don't those sweet eyes look tired... Poor baby... She's going to sleep like a rock tonight (and so am I)!!! (that's a baby carrot laying in front of her; I was munching on them - she was not impressed with the taste - prefers Milk Bones - LOL).

This one uses some distress crackle paint along the bottom portion - gold. I used a fairly thin layer so didn't get much crackling effect.

On Stamper's Corner, there is a card mingle for June called "clean-and-simple". Sometimes it's fun to go back to basics, forget the fancy embellishments, multiple layers, collage, etc. I made this simple card using the first rubber stamp I ever owned...inked with Old Paper and Scattered Straw Distress Inks. I can't remember where I got the floral ribbon, but thought it fit with this card. I like how it turned out - nice and simple.

This is an odd-satirical piece -- in the little picture (from a magnet I bought long ago) the family is out working in the yard and mom is thinking "they're not looking... I could escape". <--- tell me the thought has never crossed your mind! The "Happiness card" is from 7 Gypsies and I used little word stamps (Justrite stampers) on each line. Family is number one, then the phrase below -- "I'm not hiding anything".

On one of my Yahoo groups, Stamper's Corner, we had an Eiffel Tower card mingle last month. This was the card I made for my partner. The image of the tower is a rub-on (I can't remember the brand) -- wouldn't that make a gorgeous stamp though?? Stamps used are from I Brake For Stamps (Time To Stamp line).

After a couple of wonderful weather-weeks, can you believe we have SNOW today?! Mother Nature is trying to confuse us. Well, guess it reminds me that the calendar still says March. Anyhow, I am in an ATC-of-the-month swap on one of my Yahoo groups and our theme for April is "beach". Thought this would be the perfect time to use one of my gorgeous Artchix beach babe collage images. The background was created with several layers of alcohol inks. I'm pleased with how it turned out...!

One of my Yahoo Groups is having a "going postal" swap this month. I decided to use these sweet images, used postage stamps and a cancellation stamp from Hero Arts. The words "handle with care" were cut from magazines. The backgrounds were created with acrylic paint and SU wheel (flower flourish) stamp.

Talk about variety -- I'm finding myself using lots of different colors with the cards I created this weekend. A nice change from my usual all-earthtones. I have to say though, my scanner skews the colors a bit on some of my images.
